If you’ve tested with 23andMe, the most important file you own isn’t the tidy report you were shown online — it’s the raw DNA data file sitting behind it. That file is yours to keep, works with other analysis tools, and, given the uncertainty around 23andMe’s future, is worth exporting now rather than later.

23andMe entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2025, and its assets were acquired by a nonprofit research institute later that year. The service still lets customers log in and download their data — but company transitions can change access without much notice. Having your own copy means your genetic data no longer depends on any single company staying online. It costs you five minutes and removes that dependency entirely.
What “raw data” actually is
Your raw data is a plain text file listing hundreds of thousands of positions in your genome — each one a marker (a SNP) with the two letters you inherited at that spot. It’s the underlying measurement that every 23andMe report was built from. On its own it looks like a spreadsheet of codes, which is why a separate tool is needed to turn it into something readable. But it contains far more than the handful of reports 23andMe chose to surface.
Step-by-step: exporting your file
- Log in to your account at 23andme.com.
- Open your account settings (via your profile menu), and find the section for 23andMe Data.
- Look for the Download Raw Data option. (You can also reach it from the site footer under Resources → Browse Raw Data, then the Download tab.)
- 23andMe will ask you to re-enter your date of birth as a verification step. Submit the request.
- You’ll get an email when the file is ready — often within an hour, though the official estimate is longer. Return to the same download page and save the file, which arrives as a .zip archive.
Interfaces change. If a menu label differs from the above, look for anything named “raw data,” “browse raw data,” or “download data” in your account settings or the page footer.
After you download: back it up
Unzip the archive and you’ll have a single text file. Do two things right away: store a copy somewhere safe (a password manager’s file vault, an encrypted drive, or secure cloud storage), and treat it as sensitive — it’s among the most personal data you own. Once saved, the file doesn’t expire. You can analyze it today or years from now.
What you can do with it next
The reports 23andMe showed you are a small slice of what your file contains. Uploading it to an independent analysis tool lets you generate a variant report — an organized, searchable view of the genetic variants in your data, including well-studied ones like MTHFR that 23andMe doesn’t surface in its standard reports. You don’t need a new test; the data is already in the file you just downloaded.
