What is a GST & GPX gene mutation?
A GST & GPX “mutation” — more accurately a common gene polymorphism or variant — is a widespread variation that can influence how this gene and its enzyme work. These are common variants that shift relative likelihoods, not switches that determine your health.
What the GST and GPX genes do
GST (glutathione S-transferase) genes and GPX (glutathione peroxidase) genes are part of the body’s Phase II detoxification and antioxidant systems, both of which use glutathione. GST enzymes help attach glutathione to certain compounds so they can be cleared; GPX enzymes help neutralise reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress). Some people carry common deletions (null variants) of GSTM1 or GSTT1.

GST, GPX, and antioxidant defence
Because these enzymes support detoxification and antioxidant capacity, their variants have been studied for whether they are associated with differences in how the body handles oxidative stress and certain exposures. The evidence is relative and context-dependent, and no single gene determines “detox” capacity on its own.

There is a lot written about these genes online, and much of it overstates the case. We separate two kinds of information: what the published research has found, and — kept distinct from it — the patterns we have observed in clinical practice.
What the research shows
GST (including GSTM1/GSTT1 null) and GPX variants have been studied for associations with oxidative-stress markers and responses to certain environmental exposures, with modest and inconsistent findings.
Three things are essential to keep in view about this research:
- These variants are common — a large share of the population carries them.
- The findings are associations — relative shifts in likelihood across groups — not causation. A variant does not, by itself, cause any condition.
- Many people who carry these variants experience none of the associated patterns. Genes are one influence among many.
What we observe in clinical practice
In practice we consider antioxidant and detoxification support as part of a whole-person picture — not something to drive from a single genotype. We deliberately do not publish “detox protocols” based on these variants; appropriate support is individual and belongs with a practitioner. This is a clinical observation, considered case by case.
